That Sinking Feeling – Oil Rigs and Climate Bills

From www.globalwarmingisreal.com:

The country might also have to rely on companies’ “voluntary compliance” with measures to combat global warming: Congress doesn’t seem likely to pass a bill regulating carbon any time soon. Senator Kerry and friends were supposed to release their version of climate legislation Monday, but over the weekend, Senator Graham backed out. His reason? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had floated the idea of prioritizing immigration reform, which Graham argued would undermine work on energy legislation.

Although a draft of the bill was supposed to come out on Monday, no one has seen it. At Mother Jones, Kate Sheppard reports that even the EPA, which is supposed to analyze the bill, hasn’t received the full draft.

Twenty Years of Advocacy, Not Journalism, on Global Warming

From online.wsj.com:

For more than two decades, the so-called mainstream media have preached the dangers of manmade global warming, insisting American businesses and consumers must make massive economic sacrifices to ward off a global climate catastrophe. Not even last November’s exposure of e-mails from leading scientists on the alarmist side of the debate — showing them conniving to fudge or suppress data, discredit critics and distort the peer review process — has caused journalists to finally take a skeptical approach to radical environmentalists’ doomsaying.

•”As the science editor at Time, I would freely admit that on this issue we have crossed the boundary from news reporting to advocacy.”

Germany, Mexico trying to push climate talks ahead

From www.google.com:

Momentum in the drive to control global warming has slowed in some countries. The United States still has not tackled its domestic energy bill, which climate negotiators believe will provide a critical signal about U.S. global intentions; and Australia — one of the world’s biggest per capita polluters — put off for as long as two years legislation setting up a carbon trading scheme.

The Copenhagen conference with representatives from some 190 countries last December was originally intended to produce a new global treaty to cut greenhouse gases and set up mechanisms to deal with the worst effects of global warming. Yet, the two-week meeting came up with far less than hoped, setting back the schedule for action possibly by years.

Arctic rain in April ‘is sign of global warming’

From www.telegraph.co.uk:

The Arctic is heating up three times more quickly than the rest of the Earth. Scientists link the higher temperatures to the greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.

“We worry that if it’s too warm maybe some of the scientific samples will start to thaw … or the food will get too warm and spoil,” he told Reuters by satellite phone.

Hadow said a Canadian scientific camp about 90 miles west of the ice base had been hit by rain at the same time.

The base off Elles Rignes is supplying a three-member team out on the ice another 700 miles further north. The trio is studying the impact of increased carbon dioxide absorption by the sea, which could make the water more acidic.

US Issues Approval for First Offshore Wind Farm!

From inhabitat.com:

Countries across the world are leaps and bounds ahead of the US, installing wind farms left and right to provide clean renewable energy to the grid. The US has been lagging behind, entrenched in legal battles that mostly start with the argument that wind farms will ruin the natural beauty of the bays they are proposed in. Wind farm supporters have long held the argument that a few little wind mills on the horizon are a more welcome sight than our planet crumbling under the weight of global warming.

The Romanian government on Wednesday gave its go ahead to a carbon trading scheme to cut greenhouse gas emissions, hoping to earn up to 2.5 billion euros (3.3 billion dollars) until 2012. “Romania can trade about 300 million credits, divided into one-million-ton packages,” economy minister Adriean Videanu said during a press conference.
